Arne Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains The Club's Backing Following PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was understandable for questions to be raised about his future following another convincing loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their 9th defeat in 12 matches, representing the team's worst streak since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Eredivisie champions on a difficult evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I'm fine, I've received significant support from above,” Slot stated.
“It would be great to change things and secure a win obviously but if you are coaching a team and struggling then it's typical that doubts arise.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my role. It is not the initial instance I've found myself in a difficult position but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with The Board
When asked to provide details on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach explained:
“There's regular dialogue. They are supportive to the team and for me and those talks happen but they don’t call me all the time of the day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “Through standard exchanges I sense the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them since this match so far so let’s see.”
Familiar Issues and Squad Response
The manager expressed regret over known failings from his Liverpool side in their European loss, specifically poor finishing and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was blunter in his evaluation of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to everyone,” Jones said.
“It is unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to consider it. I’m past getting mad internally. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He added, “It's tough because I’m playing for the club I love. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a spell like this with results so bad.”
He stated, “But we continue to wear that badge on our chest. And as long as that badge is removed, we’re always going to fight.”
“We’re going to try to get this team return to its rightful place, prove again the values of this club and why people call it the top club in the world.”
“But right now, we’re in the shit and it must improve.”
