Blast Costs 3 Police Officers During Eviction Action in Italy
Three police officers lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The blast occurred as police and firefighters went into the house near the city of Verona to carry out an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
The three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
One male and one female were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled subsequent to the blast was located not long after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.
The detonation could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the scene displayed the property left as a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the property was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.
Negotiators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member triggered the blast.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander the police commander informed the media.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the interior minister confirmed.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the blast included 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The official believed the detonation had happened on a level above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he said officers had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being activated”.
Community Reaction
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
