Chicago White Sox Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Multi-Million Dollar Contract.
In a notable move for their retooling roster, the American League club have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a lucrative contract with the accomplished player.
Contract Details and Player Perks
The deal includes a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside salaries of sixteen million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.
Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for earning the MVP award.
- $500,000 for placing second or third in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for finishing in the top ten.
- Another $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.
His deal includes that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his approval and makes him a unrestricted player at the end of the contract. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..
Compensation and Team Legacy
As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization would also receive a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.
Murakami will become the fourth-ever player from Japan to play for the Chicago franchise, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a young group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a last-place season, finishing last in the division but representing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.
A two-time Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, surpassing the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was shortened to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Despite recording 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to third base.
International Pedigree
Murakami's heroics were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing two-base hit that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind one-run win. The following day in the championship game against the United States, he blasted a game-tying homer in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's subsequent championship win.
The new White Sox addition is slated to be formally introduced at a introductory event on Monday.
