In a dramatic move, Indiana Republicans rejected a measure to redraw the state's congressional district boundaries on Thursday afternoon. This decision represents a pointed rebuke of Donald Trump and broader national campaigns to gerrymander voting maps to favor GOP candidates.

The Vote

The bill was defeated by a vote of 19 to 31. A significant coalition of twenty-one GOP lawmakers sided with 10 Democratic senators to block the controversial district maps.

Currently, GOP representatives represent 7 of Indiana's nine congressional districts. The defeated map was crafted to establish GOP-leaning districts in every single one of the congressional seats. This would have been accomplished through several key changes:

• Carving up the liberal stronghold of the state capital into 4 different districts.

Meanwhile, Democrats have responded by redrawing districts in states like the Golden State to potentially add several Democratic seats. Democrats in Virginia are also ready to redraw maps for party gain.

Trump's Campaign

The former president waged a aggressive effort to pressure Indiana GOP lawmakers to approve the redistricting plan. Vice President JD Vance allegedly traveled to the state capitol on several occasions to meet with lawmakers.

In a message on his social media platform, the former president expressed his frustration on Wednesday. "Every other State has done redistricting, readily, transparently, and without issue. There was never a question in their mind that helping to secure a victory in the Midterms for the Republicans was a good move to do for our Party, and for America itself," he wrote. "Sadly, Indiana's Senate Leader Senator Rod Bray enjoys being the only person in the United States who is against the GOP picking up extra seats, in Indiana's instance, 2 of them."

Hostile Climate

In the lead-up to the critical vote, Indiana state Republicans reportedly received threats of violence and swatting incidents. Additionally, Vice President J.D. Vance and Donald Trump Jr. openly attacked Senator Rod Bray before the Thursday roll call.

Heritage Action, the advocacy arm of the right-leaning think tank, also issued a statement, stating on the day of the vote that the state of Indiana would lose congressional funds if it failed to pass the redistricting plan.
