Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
