Wardley, previously a white-collar fighter, who only started boxing when he was 20 years old, had no amateur experience and has perpetually battled doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is similarly close to a world title challenge.

“This is the most significant fight, at the moment, in the heavyweight class. These two guys have stepped up when neither of them was required to take this bout. Parker is the interim champion and they have formally instructed the champion to fight him, but he was sidelined. Parker wants to fight anyway.

“Fabio is also in a fantastic position and he only had to wait for his time. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He wanted to fight – and with Parker because it provides him a shot to accelerate his path.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “This is do or die. I am not considering defeat. I respect my opponent and his achievements and the way he's trained for this contest. But I am on a different level and I am going to show it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the two of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my boxing journey and the most important fight ever. But each time I rise to the occasion I elevate my performance. Saturday will be no different. The gap between where Joe is and what others believe about me has been a recurring narrative in my boxing life.

“He has been going around the block for a long time, with a numerous contests on his ledger. Certainly not is he an old man but he has been in the sport for a while and had some heavy fights. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a far greater number of those fights than I have.”

The Final Verdict

But the suspicion remains that Parker should prove too veteran, and too skilled, for Wardley. He is favored to secure a grueling encounter with the confidence that he is the leading contender for the champion Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a comfortable distance.
