The Welsh team Prepared to Face Anybody in World Cup Playoff Draw

Wales football team celebration

Wales have won 8 of their previous sixteen matches under manager Craig Bellamy

The team's attention are firmly on Thursday's World Cup playoff fixture as they prepare for learning their semifinal and potential final opponents.

After finished second in their qualification group thanks to a decisive 7-1 win over North Macedonia – their biggest success since 1978 – Wales will host the semifinal match on home soil.

They will face either Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo or Ireland in that fixture on 26 March.

Former Wales striker Rob Earnshaw thinks the Dragons will welcome a match against any team following their latest result at Cardiff City Stadium.

"I'm familiar with Craig Bellamy, we were teammates with him and his mindset is 'bring on anyone, it doesn't matter'," Earnshaw stated.

"A lot of supporters were wondering last night, 'should we really want Republic of Ireland because of that local atmosphere?'. In my view many people were hesitant. But personally, that would be fantastic.

"So it's one of those, indeed, we're ready for Kosovo or the Bosnians and Albania are decent and Ireland, naturally, they're a very good team so it will be tough.

"However the sense is that we'll take anyone at the moment and it doesn't matter, and much of that is down to Craig Bellamy."

Potential Playoff Semi-final Opponents Assessed

Wales are placed thirty-fourth in the world rankings, with the Albanian team sixty-first, Republic of Ireland sixty-second, Bosnia seventy-fifth and Kosovo eighty-fourth.

Albania had a impressive qualification campaign, with their only defeats coming at the hands of Group K winners England, who claimed full points without allowing a single goal.

The Premier League's Armando Broja and Lazio's Elseid Hysaj are among the Red and Blacks's more notable names, though it was ex- Inter Milan, Barcelona and Watford forward Rey Manaj who topped their goal chart in the qualifiers with three goals.

Notably, the Albanians have not yet qualified for a FIFA World Cup, though they participated at Euro 2016 and Euro 2024, failing to advance to the knockout stages on both times.

As Slovenia and Sweden had torrid campaigns, with both not managing to win a qualification match, their group was a direct battle between Switzerland and Kosovo.

The Swiss finished the six-game qualifiers three points ahead of the Kosovans, whose one loss was at the hands of the pool winners.

Kosovo feature former Manchester City keeper Arijanet Muric and La Liga's Vedat Muriqi – his nation's historic leading goalscorer – in a squad aiming for a first major tournament appearance.

They have never played the Welsh team.

Bosnia were defeated just once in qualifying, and earned a points additional than the Welsh managed in their 8 games, but still finished 2 points behind of Group H winners Austria.

They were 13 minutes away from clinching a place at the World Cup, but Michael Gregoritsch's equaliser for the Austrians meant the teams tied in the final game of qualification and Ralf Rangnick's team won the group.

The Welsh have not managed to beat the Bosnian side in 4 attempts but did have a memorable loss against the Dragons as they earned qualification for Euro 2016 under Chris Coleman despite losing.

Being his country's historic leading scorer and record appearance player, ex- Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko, currently with Fiorentina, is undoubtedly Bosnia's standout player.

The 39-year-old was his team's leading goalscorer in the qualifiers with 5 goals.

Lastly, we have Ireland.

Having taken just one point from their first 3 qualifiers, Heimir Hallgrímsson's side stormed into the play-offs with back-to-back wins against Armenia, Portugal and Hungary.

Troy Parrott scored the two goals against Euro 2016 winners Portugal before bagging a triple – with the final goal coming in the 96th minute – as the Republic of Ireland stunned Hungary to take second place in their group in dramatic fashion.

Key player Seamus Coleman had a crucial role in his side's resurgence while Brentford keeper Caoimhin Kelleher has secured the number one position his to keep.

The Republic of Ireland are without a win in their past four meetings with the Welsh, losing three of these, though James McClean shattered the hearts of the Red Wall as Martin O'Neill's team won a crucial World Cup qualifier at Cardiff City Stadium in 2017.
