UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
