Where Has the Excitement Gone? This Fall of Open-Play Goals from Open Play

Football match action
Wolves have scored 10 fewer scores from open-play situations than at this stage last season.

One of the biggest stories of the Premier League this campaign concerns the drop of goals scored in open-play scenarios and how clubs have been scoring increasingly from dead-ball situations as an alternative.

Comparing how goals have been scored to the initial 11 matches last season, there have been 39 fewer goals in open play and 26 more from set-plays and penalties, leading to 13 fewer in total.

Considering overall statistics, shot attempts teams are taking have seen an incredible drop of 370 in open play than at this stage last season.

And despite the notable jump in set-play finishes, records show a mere two extra shots generated from these situations outside of spot-kicks, indicating how effective teams are at devising strategies to score from dead-ball chances.

Scoring Rates Show the Tale

Over 300 goals recorded in 110 matches to date averages out at 2.74 goals per game, which if it continued for the entire campaign might be the least for since 2020-21, back in 2020-21 (2.69 per game).

But just 196 scores coming in open play averages out 1.78 per fixture and is on course to be the least for 16 seasons, since 2009-10 (1.76).

The 2009-10 season also marks the sole English top-flight season to see scoring more frequently from non-penalty set-pieces than the current rate of 0.77 per fixture (0.79 per game).

Which Sides Account for This Change?

Regarding goals scored from open-play, Wolves have recorded the most significant drop, scoring only four in 11 games, a reduction of 10 than at this stage last season.

Apart from Wolves, England's top division's drop in open-play scoring is largely a London thing, with half of the capital's seven sides recording a minimum of five fewer goals from open play than the previous year.

To be fair, this is mainly because their scoring lots of goals at the start of last season as opposed to them really struggling to convert in open play the current term.

Conversely Manchester City have seen the biggest increase, with almost every one of their 23 goals this season coming in open play.

Set-Piece Success

We've compared newly promoted sides with the teams that went down they replaced. Sunderland Sunderland have netted three more goals in open play than the Saints achieved in matchday 11 on their way to demotion last season.

Regarding scoring from dead-ball situations (aside from penalties), Arsenal and Chelsea have seen the biggest increase, with each team replacing the five less goals that they've produced in open play with the same number from set-pieces.

Manchester United have netted double the number scores from set-plays as they did in the 11 games last season prior to the manager took charge, while Sunderland again have been more successful at scoring than the similar-colored team they superseded.

Man City appear not to have received the trend about scoring more from set-pieces, since they've scored three less than last season, like Forest, though that might be down to the change in style they have tried to implement.

League-Wide Trends

Six teams – the Gunners, the Blues, Fulham, the Magpies, Tottenham and the Hammers – represent this term's primary examples by scoring fewer scores from open-play and increased from set-plays, while City represent the unique club to defy the pattern so far by performing the contrary.

It will be interesting to observe if teams persist to depend greatly on set-pieces as the campaign progresses or if they find again their general attacking flair and commence netting more goals in open-play also.
